.

The Lions Bed Race is an annual event for the Nelspruit Lions Club. This year our main sponsor is Hi-Q Nelspruit.

The bed race is marketed as a corporate event and encourage companies to get involved as a team building exercise. At the same time the companies are giving something back to the community of NELSPRUIT and surrounding areas.

The first bed race took place in 2004 and the funds raised in that year were used to kick start the Nelspruit Hospice. The race then took place again in 2007 and has continued each year since then. Since the inception of the Bed Race in 2007 we have donated the proceeds to various local charity organizations and last year we donated R40 000.This year the proceeds will go to Dasha School and other local charity organisations.

The event takes place this year on Saturday morning 20 August 2016 and will be taking place at I’langa Mall on the top open parking area. The meeting point for teams will be outside Mugg and Bean in the car park.

The beds will be arriving from 7:30. Judging for the best dressed bed takes place at 8:00am.

The race is planned to start at 8:30/9:00am.

It is never too late to enter a bed or to donate a prize for the race, and anyone who would like to participate can contact our coordinator Mike Graham 082 312 2400.

We invite all Nelspruiters to come to I’langa Mall on Saturday 20th August and enjoy the festivities. We will be selling boerewors rolls, pancakes and cold drinks.
We would also like to take this opportunity in thanking Hanlie Lombaard and the I’langa Mall management as well as all the tenants for helping to make this event a success.

                                          “WE THE PEOPLE

With recent events that have occurred over the past 2 weeks in South Africa, thousands of citizens – no matter their political affiliation – came together countrywide to march and demonstrate their anger and frustration with the current governments decision making and a call for President Jacob Zuma to step down once and for all.

What seemed to be an impossible task for all parties involved, turned out to be a very successful movement indeed and with more protest action planned in days to come, will you be apart of it?

South Africa is in our hands and the future belongs to our children whom will judge us on actions that we did or did not take. Make your stand now…fight for what is rightfully yours…unite against a common enemy and remember these spoken words:

The people united, can never be defeated!

Mopani Pharmacy | Diabetic workshop for the community

mopani2Mbombela – On the 20th April, Mopani Pharmacy presented their first diabetic workshop of the year. The topic was diabetes and overall health, with a big focus on managing the related conditions, such as cholesterol.

Sr. Valerie Thomas from Gauteng was an excellent presenter who really educated (and entertained!) all those who attended. Her expertise and enthusiasm has left everyone motivated to take responsibility for their own health and wellbeing.

Godfrey Tsubella from Roche took time to explain how regularly one should test blood glucose, and how to test  glucose in relation to meals. He was also able to answer questions about accurate use of glucose monitors.

9

Forty people attend the workshop which was held at Cappuccino’s at I’Langa Mall. The participants could come before hand for a complementary lipogram and blood glucose test. Their results were explained during the session and individual goals for glucose, HDL, LDL and triglycerides were set in place.

A big thank you to Sonet Hurter from MNI for bringing Sr Valerie Thomas and her passion to the Lowveld; to Roche and Accu-Check for the complimentary glucose testing and to Patient Focus for the complementary lipograms!

‘’Implementing knowledge is power!” -Sr Valerie Thomas

PPS Panorama Tour | The Toughest Race On Tar

White River – Clawing their way back from an 8 second deficit Brandon Downes & Kai Pritzen (Karan Beef 1) collapsed over the finish line in a time of 00:58:07. Leaving them with 39 seconds gained and the PPS Panorama Tour General Classification win. 6

It was a titanic battle between the Karan Beef 1 duo and Protouch-Demacon’s Barend Burger & Stephan Reyneke. The two teams contested every stage with a sprint for the finish. Ultimately it was the ‘Race of Truth’ that saw Karan Beef 1 don the final yellow jerseys.

“The field was strong and the competition was tough over the first three stages. Going into the Time Trial our main objective was to consolidate our second position. Things went well for us and we managed to clinch the overall win.” said Downes.

Local mountain biker Vanessa Bell and partner Dalene van der Leek (Team Bells Cycling LGE Midas) dominated the Women’s category in all four stages.

5

“This is my first ever road race so I made a couple rookie errors,” said Bell. “We’re looking forward to defending our title next year.”

The Time Trial went according to plan, with the top teams retaining their general classification positions.
